Welcome
Welcome to Fishguard & Goodwick Lions Club. Lions are members of Lions Clubs International, a community service organisation dedicated to the idea that the men and women who live in a community are in the best position to know who needs help and why. Local Clubs are part of the world's largest such organisation, with more than 1.35 million members within 45,000 clubs, serving in 200 countries and geographical areas. The association is both non-political and non-sectarian.
Fishguard & Goodwick Lions celebrated the Tenth Anniversary of their charter with a dinner dance at the Fishguard Bay Hotel on Saturday 13th June. The evening was the climax of a successful year for the club’s president Lion Dave Race and saw a record 113 Lions and friends participating.
Joining Lion Dave and his wife Lion Babs on the top table were, president-elect Lion David Heywood and his wife Lion Myra, district governor, Lion Surinder Malhotra and his wife Lion Indu, Fishguard & Goodwick Mayor, cllr. Gwilym Price and Mayoress cllr. Yvonne Price, The District Governor was delighted to present 3 new Lions with their badges: Lions Amie Chilvers, Gwyneth Evans and Cilla Morgan. He also presented 5 Founder members with 10 year Chevrons. A great evening was completed with the excellent music of Night Life.
Lion President Dave Race opened the June Business Meeting of Fishguard & Goodwick Lions at the Glendower Hotel. He chaired an especially quiet and good humoured meeting and as this was his last business meeting, said he was looking forward to a welcome rest. Last month, the Lions supported the street collection in Goodwick in aid of the Chernobyl Children Fund; and visited Cilgerran to promote the Lions' Message in a Bottle scheme.
Lions are planning to attend the Hillside Fete on Saturday and also voted to donate £100 to the home. On Sunday, many Lions are walking along the new A40 cycle path from Fishguard to raise funds for Diabetes UK. Plans are progressing well for the Lions Fun Day on 25th July and the brochures will soon be available for sale.
Lion Mike reported that Hilary Lister, the quadriplegic Lion who is attempting to sail around Britain has finally reached Pembroke and is planning to sail for Fishguard tomorrow. Many thanks to the Fishguard RNLI team who are ready to help with her arrival and to accommodate her support vehicles in their secure area, and also to Lions John and Bob for the planning.
The meeting was closed with Tail Twister Lion Paul, fining members for their misdemeanors, before President Dave proposed the toast to Lions Clubs International.
The Fishguard & Goodwick Lions Easter Egg Contest was a great success with 26 businesses participating this year. The winner of the Easter Egg Challenge Trophy was the Fishguard Arms who raised £90 for the Lions Charity account.Runners up were the Pendre Inn £79, Roal Oak Fishguard £77 and the Cambrian £70.
The total raised was over £750. Very many thanks to all the businesses who hosted an egg, to everyone who entered the raffles and to Mike Delaney for sponsorship. As usual, all the money will be used to supportlocal charities and good causes.
Fishguard & Goodwick Lions were delighted with the entries for the 2009 Art Contest for the local junior schools. The three independent judges, Sarah Davies, Barbara Price and Joan Marshall had a very hard time choosing the winners in both the under eight and under 11 classes. The subject this year was the local ‘Boats & Sea Creatures’ and 5 schools entered - Ysgol Bro Ingli, Newport; Ysgol Glannau Gwaun, Fishguard; The Holy Name School, Fishguard; Ysgol Wdig, Goodwick; and Ysgol Llanychllwydog, Gwaun Valley.
The overall winner was Rhys James and he wins his school, Ysgol Llanychllwydog the Lions Trophy for the year. The trophy was presented by artist Barbara Price who said it was very hard to choose an overall winner as all the entries were very good. The final decision was decided by the use of colour, the energy of the composition and with consideration of the artist’s age (under 8 class).
Thanks to a gift from local artist, Evan John, each school was presented with book entitled ‘How to Draw Anything’ for the school library.
A big thank you and well done to all the participants and the Lions hope for another record entry next year.
The third Lions Spring Concert to celebrate St David’s Day was held on Saturday at the Fishguard Bay Hotel and proved to be another very successful event. The evening was arranged by local councillor, Lion Mike Lloyd who introduced the compère for the evening, Ifan ‘J C B’ Davies. Ifan, as well as introducing the excellent musical artistes who appeared, was a star turn in his own right with a string of hilarious stories that were in marked contrast to the more serious musical content. The large audience enjoyed the singing of local stars, Lilwen & Gwenda, Claire Harrison, and Robert Rees together with their accompanists Ruth Barker and Wendy Lewis. New this year was the appearance of Dennis Reed as his alter ego, the Rev Caradoc Evans, known affectionately as Evans Above who gave a very entertaining sermon to the gathering. He appeared later as Arnold and received well deserved appreciation from the audience.
The interval provided an excellent Cawl Supper and the grand raffle, with all wonderful prizes thanks to the generosity of the local businesses.
Lion Mike thanked all the artistes and invited Lion President Dave Race to present each artiste, who all very generously performed without charge, with a rose as a token of appreciation for their support. All the money raised will be added to the Fishguard & Goodwick Lions charity account and will be used in support of local charities and good causes.
The Fishguard & Goodwick Lions are busy preparing for the 10th annual Fun Day on the 25th July 2009 on Goodwick Moor car park. It is hoped to have an even better Fun Day this year; see the report after last years event and the Photo Gallery: -
What a wonderful day for the 9th Fishguard & Goodwick Lions Fun Day.The sun shone and the crowds came to make it possibly the best day yet.
The 7am start by the Lions ensured that everything was ready for the arrival of the stalls, voluntary organisations and children’s entertainment. The usual early morning health & safety check of the area confirmed that everything was fine for the event and thanks are due to Fishguard & Goodwick Town Council and Pembrokeshire County Council for their help in ensuring the car park was available and free from parked Lorries. Music was provided by local groups; All Spice, Night Life and the Goodwick Junior Brass Band.A very big thank you is due for excellent performances in very warm conditions.Further entertainment, provided by the Fishguard & Goodwick Line Dancers was enjoyed by an appreciative audience.Looking around there were lots of happy children’s faces to be seen, the Donkeys, Bouncy Slide and Fun House seemed particularly busy, while the workshops of Buzz and Circus Malarky also drew the crowds. The Lions ‘Name the Lion’ contest was won by Cloe Lewis from Goodwick with the name Ralf and the Groceries were also won by another Goodwick resident, Mrs Maureen Maddocks. The £100 Lucky Programme draw went to W Hughes of Wolfscastle.
The Lions are most appreciative and would like to thank everyone who helped or supported the event.
